Residence Permit

What is a récépissé and what does it allow in France?

The récépissé is a provisional document protecting your legal status while your residence permit application is processed. Here's everything about it.

What is a récépissé?

A récépissé de demande de titre de séjour is a provisional document issued by the préfecture when you submit a residence permit application (new application or renewal). It's a receipt proving your application is being processed — but it's also a legal document in its own right, authorising your stay in France for the duration of your file's review.

What a récépissé authorises

A récépissé allows you to:

It does not authorise travel abroad and return to France in most cases — leaving France on a récépissé typically prevents re-entry without a new visa. Check with your préfecture before any international travel.

Validity: 3 months, renewable

A récépissé is valid for 3 months. If your application is still being processed after 3 months, you must return to the préfecture to renew it. This can happen multiple times. Keep track of the expiry date — an expired récépissé leaves you without a valid document.

How to get a récépissé

A récépissé is issued at the end of your préfecture appointment, after you've submitted your complete application file. If your file is incomplete, the préfecture may refuse to issue a récépissé until the missing documents are provided — another reason to arrive with a complete, well-organised file.

What to do if the préfecture won't give you a récépissé

Some préfectures — particularly in overloaded cities — delay issuing récépissés or issue them with very short validity. If your permit is expiring and you can't get a récépissé, send a recorded letter to the prefect demanding one immediately. The Défenseur des droits can also intervene if the préfecture is acting contrary to its obligations.

💡 Always carry your récépissé with you when outside your home. Keep it with the most recent permit it accompanies — showing both together makes identity checks smoother.

I lost my récépissé. Can I get a replacement?
Yes — contact your préfecture and explain the situation. They can issue a duplicate, though you may need to visit in person with your identity documents. Some préfectures charge a small administrative fee for duplicates.
My récépissé expired and I still haven't received my titre de séjour. What do I do?
Go to the préfecture immediately to request a renewal. Bring your original récépissé, identity documents, and any evidence that your application is still pending. A renewed récépissé is a right, not a favour — insist if necessary.
