Passeport talent permit in France: eligibility and application

The passeport talent is France's fast-track multi-year permit for skilled workers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and artists. Here's who qualifies.

What is the passeport talent?

The passeport talent (talent passport) is a special category of French residence permit designed for highly qualified foreigners. It's valid for up to 4 years (renewable) and covers both the holder and their immediate family. It replaces several older permit types and is designed to attract international talent to France. The main advantage over standard permits: longer validity, faster processing in some cases, and work authorisation automatically included.

The main qualifying categories

Family members

The passeport talent holder's spouse and children automatically receive a passeport talent "famille" — a permit of the same duration that includes work authorisation. This is one of the most significant advantages: no separate family reunification procedure required.

How to apply

Applications are made at the préfecture with standard documentation plus the specific proof required for your category. For the salarié qualifié: employment contract and salary evidence. For researchers: the convention d'accueil signed by your institution. For entrepreneurs: a business plan, financial projections, and evidence of innovation/market viability.

💡 The préfecture doesn't evaluate business plans for commercial viability — they check that you have one, that it's plausible, and that you meet the formal criteria. A well-documented presentation is sufficient; you don't need to prove the business will succeed.

Renewal

The passeport talent is renewable as long as you continue to meet the qualifying conditions. After 5 years of regular legal residence in France (which the 4-year passeport talent contributes to), you can apply for a carte de résident (10-year permit).

I earn €2,500 gross per month and have a master's degree. Do I qualify?
Not quite for the salarié qualifié category, which requires at least 1.5× SMIC (approximately €2,700 gross in 2026). At €2,500, you'd qualify for a standard salarié permit instead, which is also a valid long-term option.
Can I change employer on a passeport talent?
Yes — unlike standard employee permits, the passeport talent salarié qualifié is not tied to a specific employer. You can change jobs without needing to change your permit, as long as your new position still meets the qualification and salary criteria.
