The longer you wait, the more it costs

Unpaid URSSAF contributions automatically incur a late payment surcharge from day one: 5% of the amount owed immediately, plus 0.2% per additional month of delay. If the situation continues, URSSAF issues a formal demand, then an enforcement order — an executive act allowing them to seize your bank accounts or collect from your clients. Contact URSSAF at the first sign of difficulty, not when you're already 6 months behind.

URSSAF would rather negotiate than pursue you

Contrary to what many believe, URSSAF has no interest in bankrupting you. Its goal is to recover what's owed, not destroy your business. URSSAF representatives regularly agree to instalment plans for self-employed workers who contact them proactively. A voluntary approach is always better received than a forced regularisation.

How to frame your request for an extension

Send a recorded letter to your URSSAF (or contact them via your account on autoentrepreneur.urssaf.fr). Clearly explain the reasons for the delay, the total amount owed, and a realistic repayment plan — typically 3 to 12 monthly instalments. Be honest about what you can realistically pay each month. An underestimated plan that you don't stick to is worse than a longer but achievable one.

Also request a waiver of the surcharges

At the same time as your extension request, you can ask for a goodwill waiver of the late payment surcharges. This waiver is granted based on your payment history and current situation. If this is the first time you've been late after several years of regular payments, your chances are good.

Keep filing declarations even if you can't pay

A common mistake: stopping income declarations because you can't pay contributions. This is an aggravating factor. Keep filing your turnover declarations even if you're not paying — it demonstrates your good faith and keeps your file in order.
