Acting before the deadline is non-negotiable
The most important rule: request your extension before the deadline shown on your tax notice. If you miss that date without a prior agreement, a 10% surcharge is automatically applied to the amount owed, plus 0.2% per month in late payment interest. A request made on time avoids these penalties, even if the agreement is reached after the deadline.
How to contact the right department
Your request must be sent to the Service des Impôts des Particuliers (SIP) for your home address — the address is on your tax notice. Two options: the secure messaging in your personal account on impots.gouv.fr (fastest), or a recorded letter. A phone call is not recommended for this type of request — it leaves no written record.
What to explain in your request
The tax office is more likely to agree to an extension when the request is argued and honest. Clearly explain: your current financial situation, the event that caused the difficulty (job loss, illness, divorce), the amount you can pay immediately, and the monthly instalments you're proposing. Don't promise amounts you won't be able to sustain — a missed agreement triggers immediate penalties.
Documents that strengthen your request
Attach your last 3 bank statements, your latest payslip or France Travail certificate, and if applicable, a medical certificate or any document proving the event that affected your finances. The fuller your file, the more favourable and faster the response.
What happens after the agreement?
Once your extension is granted, stick strictly to the agreed payment schedule. If you miss an instalment, the agreement is cancelled and penalties immediately apply to the remaining balance. If a payment becomes impossible, notify the tax office before the due date — they may be able to adjust the arrangement in exceptional circumstances.
