The support most foreign students don't know about

Many foreign students in France don't realise they can access financial support through CROUS. This support exists, it's accessible, and it's not reserved for French nationals. Lack of awareness is often the only barrier. The CROUS in your académie is your main contact — its social service team is there to help you, not to turn you away.

The National Emergency Aid Fund: for everyone, regardless of nationality

The FNAU is available to all students enrolled in a French higher education institution, regardless of nationality. It comes in two forms: one-off assistance (a single payment for a specific urgent situation) and annual assistance (regular payments for ongoing financial hardship). Apply through the social service of the CROUS in your académie.

How to write an application that succeeds

The quality of your file is what makes the difference. Be precise and honest: explain your current financial situation with figures (income, outgoings, debts), the event that created the difficulty (delayed transfer from parents, loss of a student job, unexpected medical costs), and what you've already tried to resolve the problem. A vague application is rarely successful. A well-documented application with supporting evidence is approved in most cases.

Means-tested grants: conditions for non-EU students

Means-tested grants are generally available to foreign students whose parents have been residing in France for at least 2 years and paying tax there. For students whose parents live abroad, access is more restricted — but certain special circumstances allow it. Consult your CROUS social service to understand your specific situation.

CROUS accommodation: an often underused option

CROUS student residences offer rooms at prices well below the private market (€200–400 depending on the city). Applications are made via the Mes Services Étudiants portal (messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr) between January and May for the following academic year. Foreign students can apply on the same basis as French students.
